NEW REVOLUTION – interview with MERESHA by Rock Your Lyrics

RYL: Your EP “NEW REVOLUTION ” was released in April … tell us more about it… when will you release a new one?

MERESHA:  First off – congrats on your site.  Wish you great success!

Regarding my own music, I recently launched a Radio Mix of the title track “New Revolution” as the first single off the EP.  The song is starting to get radio play in the US.  The video directed by Frank Rousseau (Pitbull, Magic!, Lil’ Wayne, Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias) is out now too.

In addition, I am doing a remix competition on Indaba Music.  Over 300 Producers have entered mixes.  Some are wild – from country to hardcore takes on the song.  Now I have to figure out who won the competition and get that released.

RYL: Let’s talk about the song “LEMONADE CITY”, what it means for you?

MERESHA: Lemonade City is about being a bit of an outsider in a big city and having fun anyway.  We can all be the King or Queen of our own Lemonade City.  No matter what the cool kids and the pretty boys think.

RYL: Is there a common meaning/theme between all your songs?

MERESHA:  The songs on this EP were written around the same time.

They reflect some of the things I experienced or saw in this time.  I had just made a move to the US after growing up in Europe.  There was a bit of adjusting to do and a lot of new things I went through. The EP is not fully autobiographical but it does reflect all of that.

RYL:  Do you remember the day you wrote “NEW REVOLUTION”?

MERESHA: Actually it was written in over a year’s time.

It is based on a song called “Acid Bass” which is also out on iTunes, etc.  “Acid Bass” has a rap in it, and generally is packed full with music.

“New Revolution” was a distillation to get out the essence of the song.  Some of the vocals you hear on the record and the clapping were last minute things that were added as I was recording the final New Revolution version.  So, overall, a very long day…

RYL: how do you, usually, write the lyrics and music of your songs?

MERESHA: There is no general rule.  I note down things that come to me all the time in a notebook.  I also have a recording setup at home to capture music.  Things tend to develop.  All the sounds on the EP are by me, so sometimes things change as I add new tracks.

RYL: Which is your favorite rock song (lyrically speaking)?

MERESHA:  Here’s a hint

“Nothing really matters, anyone can see, nothing really matters, nothing really matters to me”

RYL: Which is your dream not yet accomplished?

MERESHA: Lots.  I’m just starting out.  The “New Revolution” video is just getting out there. I’ll try to work with radio stations to reach fans over the airwaves.  Will play live too.

For example  I may get the chance to open for 2 pretty big acts soon and potentially play live on TV.   Next summer might be a time when you will have a chance to see me perform at some of the festivals with some new tunes.

RYL:  Which is the best verse you ever wrote?

MERESHA:

when our eyes meet it’s always something new

we’re dancing in the rain, our own skinny blue

gotta live for the pain, it’s not worth the wait

(he loves me, he loves me)

said baby i’m falling for ya

Meresha leads towards a New Revolution courtesy of her fresh sounds

Meresha is currently based in South Florida but was born in Warsaw, Poland.

Mainly a vocalist she also plays the Guitar, Piano and Drums plus she composes and performs her own eclectic mix of provocative music which blends Bjork, Disclosure and Freddie Mercury to create a fresh new sound.

Meresha worked her unique brand of musical magic to transform Acid Bass into something special and the result of that is the wonderful New Revolution.

This song showcases her fresh musical style and as if that wasn't enough thanks to the masterful vision of MTV VMA nominated director David Rousseau, who has previously worked with the likes of Pitbull, Christina Aguilera and Enrique Iglesias.

We are treated to glow sticks and cool dance choregraphy as New Revolution is given life on a visual medium.

Meresha was also kind enough to take time out of her hectic schedule to answer a few questions for us.

1) How did you get into music in the first place?

When I was 11 during summer break I wrote a song called “Fool Don’t Be” just for fun.    I recorded it in a CD booth in a Miami mall.  Friends and family that heard it encouraged me to pursue music.  After that, I started to get vocal lessons and perform live.  An updated version of “Fool Don’t Be” ended up being part of my Kickstarter campaign 5 years later that got my first music out.

2) Who were your musical influences?

My musical influences come from a wide variety of genres.  I love a bunch of eclectic stuff. Freddie Mercury, Bjork, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley are some of the classics in my collection.
I’m also a big fan of electronic artists like James Blake and FKA Twigs

3) What tunes are currently on repeat on your Mp3 Player?

Right now I’ve got these 5 playlists going: “One Love” - for some Reggae vibes; Jazz Classics; The Perks of Being a Wallflower; The Complete Years & Years as well as The Complete James Blake.

4) What’s your life outside of music?

I like to go to a lot of other people’s concerts.  Whenever I can, I am also outside running, biking or blading.  I’m a certified Zumba instructor, though I don’t teach.  I still love it as a workout.  It inspired some of the moves in my current video for “New Revolution”.

5) If you could collaborate with any singer who would it be?

Hey James Blake, ready for a duet?

6) What’s your favourite genre of music?

I have favorites in a bunch of genres. Probably I listen most to music that some call Electronic, but I also love classic Rock, funk, reggae, some pop, etc.

7) What’s next for you musically and are there plans for a UK Tour?

The video for “New Revolution” just came out.  I also redid the mix and released a Radio Mix which is going out to stations.  I’ve also got a remix competition going on Indaba that over 180 producers have submitted “New Revolution” mixes to so far.  Once I sort through the entries, I’ll be releasing a remix EP.

8) What are your strengths and weaknesses?

I guess I keep trying. That’s a big part of being a musician.  It would be too easy to stop and do something simpler.  But then what fun would that be.

Weaknesses?  I guess like a lot of artists I’m really tough on myself.  It’s hard to listen to some of my own music sometimes because I tend to focus on what could have been better rather than just on enjoying it.

9) Where do you draw inspiration for your song lyrics?

From nature, from my travels, from things I experience, from grooves I hear.  From all over.

10) What is your guilty pleasure?

Guess I might like chocolate too much.

"Meresha is Ready to take the music scene solo ... be ready" (interview)

Meresha is the 18 year old Electro-Pop Artist from Warsaw in Poland who was in Group in the UK and USA and now is ready to take the music scene solo...Be ready.

How old are you?
18

What is your genre of music?
You can call it electro-pop. My current EP is mainly built around electronic sounds.

Give us a little Bio of you.
Alien-loving vegan singer, songwriter, musician, composer and producer.

Someone said “a musical baby of Joss Stone and Björk”.

European born and influenced, I moved to the US 3 years ago and recently released “New Revolution”, after a previous Kickstarter supported release (thanks to supporters!).

I wrote and sung every song on my album, and as a pianist, guitarist and drummer, have composed and performed each song as well.

I was also the first artist to launch an EP exclusively on the innovative new social media site tsu, one week before the music was available publicly. My new video for “New Revolution” premiered there.

How long have you been doing music?
Starting my 7th year. Recorded my first song “Fool Don’t Be” when I was 12. You can find a reworked version online.

What made you go into music?
I went to a few Paramore concerts and experienced Hayley Williams and the Band live. It was eye opening. Then I saw Black-Eyed Peas in Warsaw. After that I knew what I wanted to do.

Are you a signed Artist?
No, not to a big label. It is not a big focus for me.

What instruments do you play?
My main instrument is Voice, but I also play keys, guitar and drums. All the music on my EP is by me.

Who are your influences?
I like a wide range of eclectic music from various genres. For example, on Spotify, I’m subscribed to Bob Marley, a Jazz playlist, the complete Year & Years together with the complete James Blake and Paramore. Some years ago I was in Led Zep tribute band. Really good music inspires.

When will your new material be out?
I just put out the Radio Mix of “New Revolution” which I recently reworked. I’m also running a remix competition on Indaba Music and plan to release 3 of them. Over 150 producers have submitted mixes, so it will be a hard choice, especially as the approaches taken are so incredibly diverse and creative.

How do you get inspiration to write songs?
From a wide variety of sources. Sometimes it from the various music I’ve heard. Sometimes it’s from my travels or personal experiences. I’m also very inspired by nature and art, having sketched myself quite a bit earlier.

What is your best song you’ve written?
One of my favorite songs on the album is “you”. It’s the story of two individuals who like each other but don’t know how the other feels. It was my first love song.

Where do you see yourself in 2-5 Years?
Hopefully by that time I’ll have a body of material that I have created that will allow me to play headline shows and surprise fans with song choices.

If you weren’t doing music what would you be doing?
Well, I originally wanted to be an Astronaut and travel to a few planets. Not sure my physics and math skills will allow me to qualify, but one can dream.

When your not doing music, what do you do?
I like to go to shows when I can. I’ve seen FKA Twigs, James Blake, MGMT, Paramore, Fall Out Boy and others recently. Otherwise, you can find me outside – running, blading, and enjoying the outdoors.

If you could collaborate with one UK Artist or band who would it be?
Do you have the number for James Blake?

If you could collaborate with one USA Artist or band who would it be?
Maybe Macklemore, partially because he is crazy creative, and partially because he is doing what I want to do. Have success as an Indie.

Where is your dream venue or festival to perform in UK?
How about 3 sold out shows in Wembley? Seriously, I would love to play clubs in the UK. I’m a big fan of London and need to see the rest of the country.

Where is your dream venue or festival to perform in USA?
I’m going to look at some closely next summer. Obviously the big ones like Lollapalooza in Chicago, CMJ or SXSW would be cool.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given?
Have fun.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Figure out what your voice is. Keep working until you do. If you don’t like your stuff and what you are doing, why should anyone else. Be true to yourself first.

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
“You don’t need anybody to tell you who you are or what you are. You are what you are!” – John Lennon

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you can not forget?

Nr. 1 – the gig is for the fans, not for you. Try to make it memorable.

Nr. 2 – Have fun. If you don’t, others won’t.

Nr. 3 – Be prepared. You only can be effortless, if you put in the effort first.

Nr. 4 – Be creative. Take songs to new, unexpected places to mix it up.

Nr. 5 – If you have a band, encourage them to adopt 1-4.

Do you have social media accounts so your fans can follow you?
I’m on most major sites. You can first all the links here: http://www.meresha.com/social
I’m “Mereshas” on Youtube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. “Meresha” on Soundcloud and tsu (tsu.co/Meresha).

Whats your “New Revolution”? - Behind the scenes of the video

As you might know, I recently put out an EP album called “New Revolution”

Today, I am putting out the video to the title track and wanted to share this with you first. The video was shot in Miami in the very cool Wynwood district. You can see some of the amazing street art and street scenes in the video. Experience the “New Revolution”!

I’m trying to make it on the charts as an independent musician and a woman. Ask anyone. They’ll tell you it’s impossible. That’s why I’m doing it.

The Director was David Rousseau. You might not know his name, but you probably have heard of some of the people he has filmed. He did all the Pitbull and Magic! (remember the recent “Rude”) videos, and also worked with Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Lil’ Wayne and others. It was amazing to work with him and his team. His work earned his 5 MTV Video Music Awards nominations so far not by accident.

It was also amazing that we managed to film all on one very sunny Florida summer day. It was a 15 hour day overall. The rain started pouring right after we took the last shot (the party scene) and I had to run to my car to just barely escape being drenched.

I hope you like the result. I’ve also been honored to have this song played by an increasing number of radio stations. Last week more stations added “New Revolution” than they did songs of many of the “stars” you might know well.

Let me know in the comments to the video what you think. Really appreciated!

Would also appreciate if you help me get the word out. I don’t have a huge record company army behind me. My fans and supporters are my army.

"Meresha may soon be on a first-name basis with the public."

Enigmatic, Poland-born vocalist and one-woman band Meresha (meresha.com) moved to the United States at age 15, and released her debut EP, “Lunatic,” while in high school. Now a college student, her sophomore EP, “New Revolution,” adds elements of Prince and Annie Lennox to its predecessor’s impressive echoes of Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush and Amy Winehouse.

Meresha is the solo composer and performer on all four highly synthesized tracks, which include the bouncing opener “Lemonade City,” the electro-pop title track, the power ballad “You” and the closing production number “August.” Add in her current higher learning — studying music business — and Meresha may soon be on a first-name basis with the public.

Introducing Meresha

Meresha

Meresha has a very European sound, as if Joss Stone and Bjork had a musical baby. From the upbeat “New Revolution” to the slinky “You,” Meresha manages to fit today’s electro-pop sound that dominates the charts while also taking it to another level– think pop music for those who have discriminating tastes and don’t want the same old same old from the usual suspects like Katy Perry and Rihanna.

Meresha Born and raised in Warsaw, Poland, Meresha’s interest in music began at the age of 11 with both guitar and voice lessons. In just one year, music became her passion, and she began writing and performing for anyone who would listen. By the age of 15, Meresha had convinced her family to move to the United States so that she could fully pursue her music career.

Meresha got to work, and one year later she perfected songs for her first EP, “Lunatic”. Funded through Kickstarter, Meresha raised over 200% of her goal and used the extra money to host a launch party at BB King’s Blues Club. Adding fans around the world through her Kickstarter campaign, and drawing a large local crowd to her launch party, Meresha quickly recognized that her sound – a soulful voice with modern beats was a unique blend that people craved.

Now, with the release of her second EP, Meresha plans to take the world by storm. A trendsetter, Meresha became the first artist to launch an EP exclusively on the new social media site tsu, one week before it was available publicly. She made videos with the CEO, prominent tsu users, the tsu leadership team as well as prominent charities ahead of the launch. Could tsu be the new myspace, which also helped launch artists? Quite possibly so.

MereshaYou’ve got to respect that Meresha wrote and sung every song on her album, and as a pianist, guitarist and drummer, she composed and performed each song as well. I’m impressed.

“New Revolution,” the catchy title track on her EP, is a celebratory song that Meresha hopes each listener will interpret to be meaningful for his or her own “revolution.” An upbeat song that was designed to get listeners to dance and sing along, “New Revolution” was written and composed to lift spirits and simply have fun. It would be great to exercise to, by the way. “I created this song as a celebration of the past, creation of the new and a respect of the classics,” says Meresha. “But it really can be about many things and people can interpret it in many ways. It can be applied to music, innovation or even technology.”

One of Meresha’s favorite songs on the album, “You,” is more personal. She invites you to witness her “softer side” and tells a story she’s crafted about two individuals who admire each other but don’t know how the other feels. A powerful ballad that demonstrates the range of her voice, it is a bit mysterious, but ends well for the song’s heroes.

Other songs on the EP include the cool “Lemonade City” and smooth “August.” Visit the artist’s website to hear her music. –Mark Weber Music Blog

CD Review: Meresha “New revolution”

Posted: April 23, 2015 in Music

Tags: Dance music, Meresha, New Revolution, R&B

Singer/songwriter/artist (and alien?) Meresha is one of the rare people in the music industry that creates her own music and she does it her way. With Meresha still being in her teens, the young mindset of Meresha shows through in the way her music feels fresh. With the freedom to create her own music, Meresha takes her cues from many different influences. The music created by Meresha flows from one style to the next, changing as she goes.

On her new release of New Revolution, Meresha shows her talent as a singer-songwriter as she has created four tracks are very commercial in nature. Each track easily fits within the three and a half minute mark. Each song could very well fit onto commercial radio as they are just the right length for radio play.

The New Revolution release from Meresha begins with the track “Lemonade City”. The track begins with a gentle beat and a soft touch to the music itself. The easy feel to the R&B music on the track goes well with the lyrics about relaxing in the summertime. Meresha’s vocals are delivered with as gentle a feel as the music to the track. As the song plays out, you can almost imagine just hanging out with Meresha and her friends in the neighborhood as the make the best of the hot afternoon.

New Revolution continues with the title track. “New Revolution” begins with a vocal that is reminiscent of something that might have come from the dance group from the late 90s called La Bouche. And when the vocals from Meresha kick in, the track truly brings back the feel of the music from that time in music history. As the listener enjoys the music of the track, the lyrical content about “bringing back the past” starts to make sense as song really does have a very retro feel to it that will have the listener thinking back to the late 90s.

The new release from Meresha continues with the song “You”. While there are several tracks on the release that are good to listen to, “You” is easily the best track on the release. The track brings the R&B feel from “Lemonade City” and seems to kick up a notch. The way the track feels, it could easily have been written and produced by a major studio. The song has a very strong beat and an infectious musical feel. The simple lyrics also bring to mind much of what is played on today’s radio airwaves. If Meresha could produce something as strong as “You” on her own, what would she be able to create with the help of a major label?

With the final track of the EP, Meresha seems to wrap up the feel of her music very nicely by incorporating certain aspects of previous songs on the release. With a slight dance beat that will remind the listener of “New Revolution” and a stronger R&B feel from “You,” the song “August” has a strong musical base and a strong beat that is also gentle. Throughout the track, Meresha stretches her voice and shows her range as she sings. While she gave several glimpses of her vocal talent earlier in the EP, “August” is the track where the listener gets a real sense of what she can do.

For a young up-and-coming singer-songwriter, Meresha gives the listener a good indication of her talents. The four songs included on the New Revolution release are nicely varied which indicates a strong ability to write songs and to produce music. And her vocal delivery on the songs also gives a good indication of her abilities to perform. With a debut release this strong, one can only imagine where Meresha will go from here.

"Florida’s rising beatsmith, songwriter, vocalist Meresha arrives on the scene with her EP New Revolution" - Impose Magazine

Goldmine Sacks

MERESHA

SJIMON GOMPERS | APRIL 17, 2015

Florida’s rising beatsmith, songwriter, vocalist Meresha arrives on the scene with her EPNo Revolution, a testament to the passage rights and rebellions spelled out through pop electric diaries. Carving out fantasias that simmer around the sentiments that seasons like summer propel ad infinitum; songs like “You” address an offstage individual in expressing array of emotions in a manner free of the hesitation that overt self-conscious song composition can bring. Catching up with the artist, we discussed Meresha’s new EP and more in our interview featured after the following listen.

Tell us about what revolutions for you informed your New Revolution EP.

A few years ago I successfully convinced my parents to move from Poland to the States. I wanted to get closer to the music scenes that I had become obsessed with online. That might sound a little strange, but honestly there aren’t many places to play out in Poland. I wanted to get out more.

I’m starting to find my own crowd since I’ve moved to the States, but New Revolution is about me beginning to branch out from my own social alcove.

“You” fluxes between this really personal and profound reckoning while, the mix and production play with a bevy of electro-pop concepts to further the songs move and narrative plot. Tell us about the making of this complex number.

“You” is a story about two people that are in love but are too afraid to do anything about it and aren’t sure if the other person feels the same way. The verses are the description of the many feelings felt during this time and the chorus is about actually going up to the person and telling them how you feel. ‘You spread your arms out wide,’ in the chorus, is an indicator that this perplexed state turns out quite alright, meaning the people realize they’ve been feeling this way about each other all along.

Tell us a bit about your approaches and song writing/recording methods.

My songs usually start as an idea in my spiral notebook or some notes played on my Prophet 12 keyboard or guitar. New Revolution, was mostly recorded at home where I set up some makeshift foam set up between two doors to record the vocals. I have to say I am so fortunate to have a family that supports me, and doesn’t mind that sometimes I turn my room into my recording haven.

What else have you been working on in your compositions, songs sketches, and so forth?

I have a couple of demos up now on Soundcloud — “Fool Don’t Be” and “check check…” The first one isn’t a new song. Actually “Fool Don’t Be” I wrote when I was twelve. It’s not the exact lyrics so much I’m attached to. I do like the melody though, so I’m reworking it and seeing what might become of it. Maybe I’m a little attached because it was the first song I wrote and said to myself, ‘I want to do this. I want to write music.’

The other track, “check check..” is an evolving sketch. I also wrote it recently. It’s about escape. I’m still very fond of the breezy fantasy world I created on the track, but I need to flesh it out. Some of the lyrics are, ‘I’m going swimming on a mountaintop. It will be a while ’til you see me again. check check, we’re looking for signs of UFOs. Might be hiding somewhere here. We don’t know.’

Meresha’s New Revolution EP is available now on iTunes.

"Meresha is an enthusiastic and engaging self-starter from West Palm Beach, Florida who possesses a rich, soulful voice that belies her teenage years." - Tasty Fan Zine

Meresha – Lemonade City

Meresha is an enthusiastic and engaging self-starter from West Palm Beach, Florida who possesses a rich, soulful voice that belies her teenage years. She’s been composing and recording her own music for over 5 years and her 2nd pop/dance/electronic EP, titled New Revolution, is out April 14th. “Lemonade City” is the first cut off of it and it’s made for the shade on a hot summer day in the city. Meresha actually keeps her emotions in check for most of this urban electro-pop number, laying down a scintillating beat, deep reverberations, and squiggly electronic notes as she intones “swayin’ to them old-school beats in the summer breeze”. The song is charged with a restless, uneasy energy as Meresha edgily proclaims “you’ll die young if you follow our lead”, a reminder that there’s danger, as well as delight, to be found in the neighborhoods of ‘Lemonade City’…

"Meresha is a visionary symbol for the optimistic and efficient freethinkers of this generation. The EP is a fusion of zeitgeist beats applicable to today’s music trends." - WGPM

WPGM Recommends: Meresha – New Revolution (EP Review)

Posted on April 14, 2015 by Matt Hobbs

It can’t be too coincidental that Warsaw-born Florida-resident Meresha has the first ever world music music premiere on fast-growing and ground-breaking social media website Tsu, considering the title track of her new EP New Revolution sounds like it could be the theme music to their advertising campaign.

Already in the millions after its launch in October, Tsu aims to be a new revolution by calling themselves the first “socially responsible social network” and rewards its invited-only community with royalties if they continue to grow its world and share advertising posts. Although the website describes the methodologies as “a network growing relationships”, which makes it seem more friendly and allows a greater ease for musical lyrics to fit metaphorically like in the case of Meresha.

New Revolution“ feels like the poster song for the website’s ethos considering it promotes positivity and ambition, and suggests at the financial help, Tsu aids musicians, such as Meresha herself, who has benefited from its services in comparison to streaming options or pay-to-publicize schemes. Lines such as: “Music revolution is here today, revolution is breaking through” show warrior spirit and an insurgent character.

Yet there is also another incentive, which is to celebrate the idea that musicians are beginning to compose and produce their own art in freedom with a verse that appears oxymoronic with its title: “bringing music back to the past” and “dusty boombox only knows my name”. Keyboards press like Hot Chip’s ”One Life Stand”, and contribute to the planetary backdrops of Meresha’s Americanized raps, genre-bending composition and punchy beats as she delivers her Magna Carta of music principles.

Meresha is a visionary symbol for the optimistic and efficient freethinkers of this generation. Rather than grow scared or lost in the clutter of over-selective binary, she has accepted platforms of social media for creative gain ever since her successful Kickstarter campaign (relating back to chain-less musical freedom ideology), and that’s why it’s no surprise she welcomes newbies Tsu into her life. The science-fiction artwork for her EPNew Revolution, her vegan attribute, her extra-terrestrial confession and her mission plan to “take over the world” pushes her ambition concept into exciting and rebel-fueled territories.

In her lyrics, she paints utopian scenes as if promised by the divine Maria in Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. A chillwave and “concrete paradise” complete with liquid bliss called ”Lemonade City“ that promises “to take all your worries away”, and encourages interaction: “come with us to be cool and set the world away”. Whilst the listener is notified of a vacancy for a top hierarchy position as the king and queen of her visions. A voice that travels around the galaxy between Lorde and Kelela, it has megaphonic variations that aid an image associated with Janelle Monae’s alter ego Cindy Mayweather but in a less cold metallic fashion and is benevolent like a track from relevantly-named Brooklyn band Lemonade’s collection.

The EP is a fusion of zeitgeist beats applicable to today’s music trends and ”You” jumps on the dream pop wagon with it’s echoey wave of Purity-ring-esque synth electricity but it’s matched with the smooth tempo and calm voice of nocturnal alternative R&B acts Banks, Brika and Tinashe and self-confessed inspiration of Disclosure and post-dub-step act James Blake. It’s very enchanting, ear-catching and significant and wouldn’t seem out-of-place on a hipster YouTube channel or in an early 20s-demographic-targeted clothes store.

The best is saved to last as “August” is an addictive and sophisticated blend of acid jazz keyboards, steady basslines and builds from ambient house, balladry voice, Hendrix wah-wahs and spacey swirls. The powerful description: “you’re eyes like skies they’re amber”, is also well placed because, among the obvious connotations with the leaf-dropping season, the colour is associated with strength and purpose, courage and personal development. “Autumn” is timeless but unfortunately ends too soon. Although, it’s safe to say that Meresha’s revolution and footprint on the music industry has just begun.
